What a Difference a Day Makes

Two girls in school. One mother sewing. Oh joy of joys! Last night I delved into the girls sewing box and looked for anything that I could use for piecing. Imagine my surprise when I found out that they had acquired this out of my sewing supplies!

I didn't mean to sound like a thread snob yesterday, but the girls have some thread that came in one of those sewing kits you can buy. I tried to use some once in a cheap and desperate attempt as it was the colour I desired and I didn't feel like going out to buy some. It broke, and tangled, and generally was a complete nightmare. But this Gutermann polyester - well, if I had only known they had it days ago I probably would have been much nicer to them because I would have had a distraction while housebound.

Needless to say I have been sewing today. We will skip through the unpleasant bits like the huge grocery shop, or the washing of bins (yuck!). No, all that is immaterial because I finished my Stained Pink Colourful quilt top today and I love it!!

I went for a wider sashing around the perimeter just because I wanted to. Now I will have to piece a backing but I just don't care. Have I mentioned that I love this quilt top?

Can you tell what I used to pin this to while taking the photos? Here's a wider shot.

It worked remarkably well and I must remember it for future reference. The wind was less cooperative than the swing set.

I am so glad I joined Sarah's QAL because when I envisioned this quilt in all different fabrics I never thought that it would be such a 'me' quilt. But it is and this one is for me, no one else but me.

So many of my favourite fabrics are in this quilt. Not all of them because I would not use ones with a white background for this pattern. But I squeezed in as many that made me smile as I could.

Well, I'll have to think about the pieced backing now. And I can because I have plenty of this now.

I suppose I had best go and get the girls from school as they were so kind as to oblige me and stay for the whole day. Bless them, I do like them again. Absence does make the heart grow fonder.

Susan

  5. I think the backing would be a grand place to use those white background fabrics that you adore. I would make the back just as lovely as the front. I do love the front and all this time I thought you were making it for me...LOL just teasing. Phew....I can quit holding my breath for the girls. I guess they are safe again now that you have had some sewing time.

  6. Ok, so all I could think about through this whole post is Jamie Cullum's song "What a Difference a Day Makes", or at least I think that's he name. It's the chorus. It should be the name. Great music, btw, in case you don't already listen to it.

And I use Guterrman for all my projects. Glad to see someone else does too. I was beginning to second guess myself when I see all my friends using other brands!

  29. Susan-- It is beautiful. I love pink & yellow together, it is so cheerful. You will love sitting under this sunny, happy quilt on dark winter days.

I think it needed a wide border. It is just right.

  32. That quilt top is just beautiful. I was saving having a go at that for an all-solids piece later in the year, but having seen it in your multi-pattern layout, I might be changing my mind!

Oh, and my old machine was a thread snob too! My new one's not so bad, but I'm waiting till they've had a good gossip in the sewing room and the old one leads the new one astray!

  35. I LOVE LOVE LOVE this quilt and I want one for myself. If I promise to visit more often will you make me one? Or if I promise NOT to visit more often, whatever works. Tell the girls I'm glad they are feeling better and thank you for waiting until I went home to get sick.

  49. Beautiful quilt. I'm fairly new to quilting, but would love to give this design a try. Can you tell me where I could find this pattern in Canada?

    1. Sorry, you are a non-reply blogger so I couldn't email you directly. Hope you get this message.

The pattern is online with http://narcolepticinacupboard.blogspot.co.uk/ If you go to her blog you will find a tab at the top of her home page that leads to all the instructions from cutting to piecing. The pattern is designed to use 11 FQs but I chose to use 144 different fabrics. The choice is yours.

Best of luck with the quilting and let myself (or Sarah - Narcoleptic) know if you have any questions.

    2. Thank you for the reply Susan, I've never commented on a blog before, so please excuse me if I have violated any protocols or procedures. I came across your blog while I was doing some research on purchasing a new sewing machine (what an undertaking that is!!), so I will check out the above website for the pattern. It looks like it will be a lot of fun to make, and I will keep your comment about the 144 fabrics in mind when I am choosing my fabrics (always the hardest part in my opinion), and hope it turns out as beautiful as yours.
Thanks again from a fellow Canuck in Ottawa.

    3. No worries about protocol at all. Most bloggers, me included, love to get comments. It is just if you are a no-reply blogger you can't be replied to directly. But I am so pleased you got my above information and then best of luck with the quilting. Please let me know how you get on with the Stained pattern and I would love to see your finished result.

  50. Just downloaded/printed the instructions - this is going to be a challenge for me! Looking forward to choosing the fabrics and may enlist my "artistic" sister's help with this. I'll certainly let you see the final result, but it may take a while since I have several other projects already on the go. Perhaps this will be my "winter" project. Thanks again ... and by the way, my name is Margaret - sorry I didn't include it earlier.
