48 or 49 Weeks a Year We Live Like This

So why does the house feel so empty when you take down all the Christmas decorations? And why does everyone want to help put them up but no one wants to help take them down again?

I don't usually take down the decorations until after the new year has begun. But this year I may have left it a little late. Here's a clue to why I think that.

The tree may have been losing needles faster than the speed of light, but pulling off the ornaments left it near about naked! No matter how diligently I hoover you just know we are going to be treading on those dried out little mini spikes for ages to come. The downside of having a real tree!

So all I have to do is clear the table of a mass of ornaments and then I can get back to the sewing. The girls have to help me with this task because they know which ornaments are theirs and I don't have a clue!

This is the hardest day of the holidays for me. The ending. I think I am going to get those ornaments sorted so I can have a little sewing therapy to cheer me up. Maybe with a box of chocolates by my side.

  1. The taking down is always a bit of a downer, isn't it? For some reason my boys were just as excited to take them down as they were to put them up so I had plenty of help. I think they were just looking for more room to invade with their toys. Sewing and chocolate sounds like a great pick-me-up!

  2. I had the same problem. When I started taking things down everyone seemed to disappear. Amazing!

  5. I dont mind taking them down, but its the re-commencement of housework that taking them down signifies that I really object to...

  8. I totally feel your pain- for me its the lights... oh sure they cam OUT of the box, but you could spend a lifetime trying to get them back in without the box bulging, ripping, or crinkling with the sound of broken lights. At least your daughters can help!

  9. I took mine down a few days ago: my house is only small and I just felt that we needed some room back!
Can't believe we are back to school/work tomorrow. It has been a really relaxing two weeks that has gone way too fast!

  10. We are still all decorated, too lazy to take down, plus #1 son and his family are still here. When we used to have a real tree I learned a little trick. Spread a big sheet under the tree when you are setting it up. You can then bunch it up and cob=ver it with your tree skirt. But then when taking down the tree you spread it out again and it should catch most of the fallen needles. Happy sewing and hoovering!

  11. BP always offers to help take the decorations off the tree. Her attention span for the job, every year lasts about 15 mins!
I loathe taking the decorations off and putting everything away. Nothing ever fits back into the box that it came out of.

  12. Ours will stay in place until friday, then we can start the weekend with a clean slate. Touch wood (literally) no needle-droppage so far, otherwise I'd be back to the lay-by for a refund!

  13. take down day tomorrow for us now the Diva is home and will help :) the big bonus is the chocolate hidden on the tree, treats for all those who help take it down! sorted! :) But like Sarah, it's the necessity of house work that follows I object to also! :) Happy sewing!

  16. I think I will leave the tree up as long as possible. Apparently tree pick up day is Jan 10 so I have at least until then. No one helps me either with the un-decorating, I like the idea of plenty of chocolate. Happy sewing.

  17. Yes, I too dislike taking down the tree. I was going to do it today but have decided to procrastinate. Nobody ever wants to help in this house either. AND this year, I had to put it all up by myself so the thought of cleaning up alone is putting bad words in my head... My deadline is Friday, though, because I go back to work Monday and have to take my daughter back to university on the weekend.

  20. I always get that job!

We have it sussed now - tree is in the dining room - ceramic floor and quick exit out of patio doors! Couldn't be easier!

Unless someone else did it of course!

  21. We took ours down a couple of days ago and I made sure everyone helped! They didn't get a choice LOL

I don't mind taking the tree down so much as I do sorting through all the Christmas cards and finding homes for all the new stuff that has arrived in the house...that's the bit I don't like.
