My Precious

We've all got it, fabric we love so much we never use it. Other than the occasional fondle why do we buy it then? So today I sucked up my courage and cut some small bits from my precious Heather Ross stash.

I starched, and I cut some of those squares into triangles, and eventually I got to the sewing bit.

Five down, eleven to go. Cutting my Heather Ross has not been near as traumatic as I thought it would be. Do you have fabric you never touch for fear of using it up and never being able to admire it in your stash again?

  1. All looking lovely. No...have nothing I can't cut into...just aren't enough hours in the (or conversely too much fabric in my stash) to get to it all!

  2. Add the word 'day' somewhere into my previous comment and it'll all make sense!

  3. they look fab! I don't have anything that I wouldn't cut into, just too much that keeps building with my fabric habit.

  4. Those are the cutest blocks. This is another block I just want to make every time I see it, such a nice way to show off some prints and also play with values. You will have the cutest quilt or is it to be a pillow?

  5. A perfect combination of design and fabric! I don't think I have any 'too precious to cut' fabric as most of my stash is made up of leftovers from previous projcts!

  6. There's an 'e' missing there, I think someone ate it...

  7. very cute! And yes, I have fabric that is several years old that I just take out and look at now and again!

  8. this looks lovely! Actually I do not have a fabric I do not cut but I have charms from the swaps I do not use

  9. Love those blocks! Look forward to seeing it all together

  10. I actually don't do that, but if I have some particularly good stuff I make sure I use it well and maybe design a project around it. I also like to make sure it lasts as long as possible so additions to my scrap drawer are encouraged with treasured fabric!

I have a goldfish bowl project in mind where I'm collecting 8" squares of fish fabrics and could really use some Heather Ross goldfish in there so if you come across any more on your fabric shopping travels please let me know :)

  13. yes I'm completely with you on the fabric I like to look at rather than cut at! But like your other posters I make sure I use them on a really good project, just like you are doing here. The blocks are beautiful as usual :)

  14. The cat lying on its back is so sweet - good for you for cutting in to it - you won't regret it.

  15. I think the problem is that we are all waiting for just that right pattern to come along so we can cut our favourite fabric. Sometimes we find fault in the patterns but I think there comes a time when we just have to (as my daughter says) "suck it up" and cut. Good for you for finding the right pattern.

  16. Now you know about the fabric I haven't managed to cut into yet ;) I love your little blocks, especially the Andrew fishy. You are going to have the best precious pillow x

  18. Wow, those look lovely, you have been very brave today, gold star, did you have to have a gin to steady your nerves? ;o). I have fabrics I don't want to waste, and I haven't found the right project for, so I don't want to start hacking bits of it up, and then it doesn't get used, very silly I know! x

  20. You deserve a bravery award! I hold onto it for just the right project, and then think what the heck, use it, you bought it because you love it!

  21. Damm fine blocks you have there too!

  22. The blocks are lovely! I do have fabric I do not want to cut up, but only until I find the perfect project to use them in. They get admired more in a project than in a box hiding away...

  23. Lovely blocks.

  24. Lovely wee cuts, it'll be a fab cushion! Am most scared of cutting into my melody miller...

  25. I think we hold on to precious fabric we love because we are looking for the perfect way to display, to do them justice. We certainly don't want to waste them or spoil our love for them by making something 'ugly'! Spending our hard earned cash on the fabric probably has something to do with it too! Your blocks are very sweet and it's the right time to use them, all things considered! ;-)

  26. Yes, I do have fabric which is beautiful (to me) and that I don't want to cut into. Mostly because, I fear the end result will not turn out great and I will have ruined it! Talk about insecure!

  27. gorgeous! It's made to be used. Except for my DS stash, of course. That can never be touched.

  28. I am getting much better at using stuff than I was. As long as I can have at least one project with it in for myself then I don't mind if I use the rest...hmmm maybe not and I'm just talking big about it!

  29. Oooh, pretty, might have to drop by and steal that ;o)

  30. I love this block, these look great. Yes, I do horde some of my stash, but most of it I'm happy to cut into.

  31. Please feel free to just go ahead and send me that quilt when you're done, k? :D

  32. I am right there with you on this one... I have this fabric sitting in a little pile right next to my cutting mat taunting me. I've intended to DO something (make a cushion) with it for a few weeks but haven't done it. Maybe I was just waiting for this post - your squares are gorgeous I can't wait to see them finished!

  33. Clapping and cheering here because you had the guts to do what most of us never do -- cut into your favourite fabrics.

I have some Sandi Henderson I still havent cut into. I know what I want to do with it now (that took about three years to make that decision ) but its still sitting there waiting for me to get brave !

  34. I can see why you wouldn't want to, cut into it. It's absolutely gorgeous, all of it. I think when there's fabric in our stash that is so perfect perfect it's daunting to use because our skills are not perfectly perfect and we don't want to waste and ruin the prettys. I have some fabric that I pull out just to stroke the pretty. I haven't found the project for it yet, but I hope when I do, I'll be brave like you and cut. Because look what happens next!! Something even prettier!! And better yet, something you can use and have around you all the time instead of hiding in a cupboard.
This is going to be amazing. Look how pretty it is already!!
    E xx

  35. These are very cute! I felt that way about my Ruby fabrics and then I went and cut into them and gave the quilt away as a gift. There's a growing bundle of red and white fabrics in my stash that I am collecting for a quilt and I probably have enough to start something now but I can't bring myself to do it until I have a "perfect" plan for it.

  43. Oh if only you could see my cupboards...I buy fabric and then it sits because I fear it will never be available again, but something else yummy always comes along...I tell myself I'm saving my stash for when you come and visit, lol.

I am collecting some all time favs for a blow out quilt. So far I have some vintage teacups from Melody Miller, kept in a special place, fabrics do fade when theyre folded on a shelf! x
