In the Eye of the Beholder

Do any of you recognise this needle book?

Nice, isn't it? Oh please, stop being so polite! We have all done it - well I will admit to it at least - made something that seemed like a good idea and then turned out as ugly as sin. I didn't make this needle book. Rhonda from Quilter in the Gap did. She didn't mince words when she took a second look at it after finishing up. To quote - "Well I tried to make a needle book for that same partner and it was the grossest thing I have ever made....Seriously. Terrible!"

So now you have stopped worrying that I was going to try and make you love this needle book - I am going to anyway. Because this needle book may land on your door step one day. You never know. It may not be the prettiest needle book every made, but it is going to become the most travelled.

I had a discussion with Rhonda after she made this and she came up with the idea that it would be fun to pass it on to someone who would get the joke. Who would then pass it on again, and so on, and so forth. And she did. Rhonda sent it to Hadley - Flying Blind on a Rocket Cycle. Who then sent it to me.

I have had it a little longer than I should have. We won't talk about my November. We are looking forward not back. But I have now put it in the post and sent it to a new temporary home. I am hoping that person will then send it on. If you open an unexpected parcel one day and find this needle book in your possession, laugh, see where it has been and send it on its way. Let's see just how much of the world it can travel.

Whose name is on the list next?
Therefore my Favourite Thing Friday this week is our failures as well as our successes. We can get as much joy out of one as the other sometimes. And I don't know about you, but I appreciate bloggers who tell it like it is, admit to imperfections, mistakes and bad days, as well as celebrate all the good stuff. If you read me then you must know by now you get me, warts and all. Well I like your warts too! Thank you for being open and honest about what you make and do.

I leave you with the question - Do you ever wonder why we buy our children toys?

Seriously, I always thought that they outgrew this stage but mine didn't.
And I love that they haven't!
Susan

  1. What a great idea! Hope it lands on my front porch..hint, hint, wink. ☺

Umm...shop at the Club Warehouse? I've never seen that much toilet paper in one house! LOL They appear to be having the best time. Wonder what they'd think if you wrapped up a box of it for Christmas? ☺ Happy FTF!

  6. Great idea with the needlebook. 95% of the time I make something for someone else I don't like it. There is usually something I'm not happy about. It seems even worse when it's a swap. I feel like the crappest sewing person on the planet.

You're right kids find amusement with out a lot of fancy toys and gadgets. I'm in awe you stock pile this much loo roll though! Are you sure they're not just looking for the andrex puppy?

  12. What a brilliant idea!! I have to say though, it's nowhere near as ugly as some of the things I've made - maybe I should send them on a round-the-world trip! and I'm completely with you on showing your failures as well as your successes, well you must know that as I would barely have anything to blog about if I didn't!!

  17. It's like the gnome thing isn't it?
And, don't you take any notice of those toilet paper comments - I buy mine at Costco (I have a lot of cupboard space......)

  18. You do have a LOT of loo paper!!! Now I know who buys all the 12 packs! I hope the needle book makes it " down under " one day! What fun!

  19. lol, lovely idea for 'Fugly' :) I know the girls have been sick, but really, all the loo roll, my goodness, my bathroom would be full with that lot! Looks like the girls had a blast with it all though :)

  20. Finally someone who has a toilet paper stash just like mine. I'm always preparing for a world toilet paper shortage. Mr. P wont be laughing when I can sell our stash on the black market and we can fund an overseas holiday with the proceeds.

If you send me that needle book Im sending you a half finished sock monkey as payback.

  21. Seriously, why do we buy them toys, when they can build a tower that great? that's a lot of TP. Boxes, toilet paper, sticks, what else do they really need?

At my house, we have a gift that gets re-gifted every year. It was a huge shirt given to a very small person and we thought it was hysterical, so now, someone gets it every year.

  22. Hey without our failures how would we ever learn? And where would we get our jokes? I thoroughly enjoyed your favorite thing!

    ReplyDelete
  23. Wow, a whole new approach to regifting! Seeing your girls, having fun sans toys, reminds me of my favorite pasttime as a kid--a large appliance box. How cool!

  24. great way to spread the love :)

I don't quilt, but I cook, and believe me, I've had many failures. The hard thing about food blogging is to describe to my readers how something that looks delicious actually tastes disgusting.

Fun game with the toilet paper - :)

  25. So cute, the girls having fun! Kids always have the most fun when they're not playing with toys it seems ;)
Hilarious idea for the needle case!

  26. haha - what a fantastic idea - i remember the original post about that needlebook - hope it turns up in oz

    ReplyDelete
  27. I'm hoping it turns up in Oz too as I think that's a great idea to send it unannounced to some unsuspecting soul.
It's great when kids can find fun things to do with everyday things. It looks like they were having a blast.
I have lots of loo rolls here too!!!!! Just in case, lol.

  28. haha, I think this is a great idea! And spied it on Judith's blog this morning. Plus, you need to reduce the toilet roll purchasing, I have recently introduced a policy of hiding mine and setting it out 1 at a time to avoid exactly the problem you have :-)
