A Little Bit Canadian

Did you know that Canada has more doughnut shops per capita than any other country in the world? Tim Hortons being the most well known brand. We aren't in Canada, obviously, and can't partake of this treat quite so readily where we are. But today Emily injected a little bit of Canada into our lives.

The recipe called for round doughnuts but I found it was easier to fry the traditional hole in the middle ones, because they didn't keep flipping themselves over without my permission. Either way, they tasted great and came out way better than I expected. All credit to Emily, not me. I was just the kitchen help - deep fat fryer and cleaner upper.

Our little bit of Canadian(ish) food for today.

A very happy Canada Day to one and all.

  16. Funny how food says "home" isn't it? We live in the U.S. South, and I never realized how strong this connection was until my daughter was in college and wanted me to send her grits - a food we never ate at home! Your doughnuts look delicious!

  18. Yummy donuts! Everyone goes mad for Krispy Kreme here but I have to stay away from any donut shop or I'd start to look like one in no time!

  21. Happy Canada Day to you :) Your Emily is very talented, doughnuts are not that easy.
We actually have paczki i.e. round doughnuts (without a hole, but with rose hip jam) and we think of them as traditionally Polish ;) We eat heaps on Fat Thursday.

  25. God do I miss Tim Horton's! I would give my right arm for a cruller! I was hoping my little one would decide to be born today, but alas, I will not have a Canada Day baby. That would have been awesome!

  26. Happy Canada Day to you. The sun is just setting here in Canada on Canada Day and I passed by several different Tim Hortons today in my travels. Emily's donuts look more delicious to me.

  27. Hope you had a great Happy Canada Day, don't those doughnuts look yummy, I used to inject strawberry jam into my ball ones but always preferred the ring ones :)
A totally yummy 1000's of calories doughnut dessert is a brown derby, we used to love the wimpy ones but then made our own http://www.wimpy.uk.com/menu.asp?id=33&mm=1

  33. Happy (belated) Canada day! I found a doughnut on my walk on Monday - swallowed it whole before 'she' noticed what I was up to. I don't think the boy who left it on the grass while he was playing hide and seek was best pleased though - he spragged on me and I had to wear my lead all the way home...with a tummy full of doughnut - bliss!
