Back To The Drawing Board

As you know, because I am not shy about telling you repeatedly, I am a member of the inimitable Brit Bee. These ladies are not just great quilters, but have become the most amazing friends. I feel very blessed to be part of this group. And we are about to enter our third round of the bee. To make it exciting we are changing it up this round.

We all have to pick a colour scheme and make a centre block for our quilts - a star. We have to do that this month. I sat and pulled fabrics like it was an Olympic sport. I think I am happy with the colours I have chosen for this quilt.

I am aiming for blues in rich tones and navys, pinks in all sorts of tones, low volume as the background and touches of lime to throw in some more interest. I have debated adding in citrus colours rather than just lime. But the above palette is what I am going with at the moment.

The star is flummoxing me though. I was thinking of doing a star within a star within a star. I have the first two  stars done and suddenly I do not think it is nearly exciting enough.

I think I may sit with pencil and paper tonight and see if inspiration hits me. The best stars are all foundation paper pieced and we all know that I am not going there again for a long time. I am contemplating trying to design an epp star.

Anyone have any good ideas they would like to point me in the direction of? Or should I add on the third star, in pink, on the above block and be done with it. It does resemble me - simple. Slightly wonky. But bright and cheerful.

Susan

  1. How easy would it be to do a bit of a rehash and put each star on point within the next one up? Lovely colours :-)

  2. I like Pennie's idea. I also like the idea of doing pinky/greeny stars like the one in the middle at each corner instead of the plain green.. But then you wouldn't have one big star so that's probably not what you're wanting either. An EPP star made of diamonds could be pretty cool too.

  3. I say no drawing board needed, it's beautiful and a stunning palette!!

  4. I like it as is - I'd add the pink star and call it done. Sometimes when others get all fancy I feel like I have to keep up but I do like simpler things at heart. It doesn't have to be a New York Beauty to BE a beauty!

  5. I have a plan for the star but totally undecided on colours. It is difficult to make so many decisions all at once. I hope that inspiration hits you (and me) very soon. Di x

  7. I love what you have done anyway, it is so easy to over think things. Just go with your gut reaction.

  9. I think it looks really pretty as it is. Add the pink star and then see how you feel - it will still be a beautiful block! Rx

  10. I love the star within a star idea. I think its brilliant !

You could always add a mini star border to the blocks if you feel it needs more dazzle.

  13. Did you see little miss shabby's recent giant star series. I love them and they are all pieced. There are four to choose from. I think it finished this week but has run the last four Wednesdays. If you are interested and can't find the links let me know. I think I will use one when I finally get around to making my own medallion quilt.

  14. I agree with the above suggestion of turning them on point.
But an EPP star would also be stunning, after all you are the EPP queen :)

  15. Susan, this looks great! I do think another round of something with the pink would be stunning, so I'd opt either for another star or putting it on point. Nicely done!

  17. It's a beautiful block as it is. It reminds me of this one a bit http://www.quilterscache.com/D/DoubleStarChainBlock.html. I think I would add a border of HSTs in the lovely indigo/navy and pinks you have selected :)

  19. I like it as it is but if you really want to do another block, try the a star within a star within a star you were thinking of, if you don't use it I'm sure it could be adapted into a cushion or something

  20. I like it as it is. You could add the pink star around it to see how it will look. It may have very large empty background corners, though, if you go so big. And when it is all done, you will have much more going on around it, won't you?

  21. I was just going to do the original one from the pattern, so now I feel all inadequate lol I'm sure you'll work something out that turns out to be perfect!
