The Waiting Game

The courier company had a five hour window to pick up the quilt today. Five hours! Though they were supposed to aim for 10am. Fat chance. Obviously they failed totally and arrived ten minutes after I had left the house. Which would be why they had been explicitly instructed by the magazine to arrive before 2pm.

So I was stuck in the house all day. You might think I would finally get some sewing done, of the Christmas present type making. Well, I was working on the right holiday but in the food medium instead.

I got the Christmas cake made, finally. Every year I think I will get it done in half term. Every year I fail. Next year maybe I will aim for before half term and see what happens. I also got the mincemeat made. And then chilli for dinner. And got a chocolate cake all measured out and ready to mix as soon as the oven was available again. It's himself's birthday tomorrow. Cake is required.

I tidied. Minimally. I folded and put away laundry. I was truly having a productive day. More than I can say for the courier company.

Whilst tidying I went to put away the fabric leftover from the quilt I just made. All the pieces were odd shapes and sizes, and there were a lot of little bits that begged to be cut up into something useful rather than me trying to sort them into tidy piles. So I started cutting.

Look at the state of my Go! Baby cutting mat. I ordered a new one a week ago. They shipped it today. Out of curiosity, why does it take a company a week to put an item into an envelope? Hope it gets here tomorrow so I can cut more efficiently. Lots of these odd shaped pieces of fabric to go. The aim is to have enough triangles to make a cushion cover.

Maybe it could become a Christmas gift for someone. Then I could start ticking off those boxes. Do you plan to make gifts every year and every year think you have lots of time to get it done, and then suddenly it is the middle of November and you are left wondering how on earth that happened? Every damn year I do this to myself. Don't even ask when I always think I will have Christmas cards written by!

Well, if nothing else at least I'm consistent. One day I might be organised but don't count on it any time soon.

  1. I had a big plan to do a handmade Christmas this year. I'm caught out. It won't be happening. I'm struggling (and failing) to keep up with the birthdays. I'm going to blame the weather. It's been so mild I still think it's October. I keep writing October not November on things.

  2. I thought about getting everyone to do handmade, but I didn't start pitching it early enough. Very productive day .. I can't even begin to think about Christmas food yet. Am having trouble thinking about the big meal I need to make next week .. (US Thanksgiving).

  3. I was the opposite, I was making NO Chrimbo gifts this year. So obviously I've got 3 silly trapper hats to knit, 3 scarves to match to sew and two sets of jewellery to wire up. Doh!

Are the couriers having a second bite of the cherry another day? And I agree about length of dispatch time in some places. Ridiculous! !

  6. I was chained to the house all day Monday for a faulty product to be uplifted - no time slot available so they turned up at 4.58. The replacement product was also rubbish but "it wasn't possible" for the driver to pick up both so today I am chained to the house again.(Computer obviously said NO)
BTW, early on, I let a Go mat get quite worn and bumpy - it actaully caused a die to break, just saying.

  7. I always do make some presents but never as many as I plan too. I am quite good at getting birthday presents done but Christmas can be overwhelming. I also tend to batch sew for time like this, so far 12 people will be getting small teabag wallets. I have done other things too but have just got myself a job after 19 years at home so will be starting work 4 days a week form 1st December, this means only special people will be getting hand made presents from now on. x

  8. It's such a pain when service/repair people don't show up when they say they will. It looks like you made good use of the time.

  9. Did you leave the quilt outside the front door for the courier?! I'm like Lynz: every year I plan to make no Christmas presents and end up making at least half a dozen. This year I've already made four presents (I started one in the spring!) and have another two to make. I hope that's all I have to make but last year I ended up making two big cushions for my nieces and didn't finish them until late on 23rd December...that is NOT happening this year!
