Imitating a Sloth

Imitation may or may not be the sincerest form of flattery, but I have been doing one heck of a good job making like a sloth here. I have moved at record slow speed from one task to another, managing to keep the family fed, invite friends over for them, and little else.

I contemplate doing things, but taking the action from mind to productivity seems to be quite a problem. So please bare with me, there are only ten more days until school - and therefore routine - returns to our lives.

Despite that dire warning, I do have something to show you, which is the finished hexie cushion top.

This is different from anything I have done before. All that EPP, for one - then appliquĂ©ing it on the background fabric. The embroidery as quilting thing. I think it is even my first proper rainbow project.

I didn't plan the embroidered flowers. Just stitched them freehand in whatever style I wanted. I like some better than others (the yellow one and the wee little green ones are currently my favourites) but over all I think it makes for an interesting effect.

The little stitched 'ties' in the hexies took me way longer to do than I expected. I changed the colour of the thread as I worked my way round, to keep with the rainbow theme. It might have been time consuming but I like the effect of these too. It is fun when a project takes us out of our comfort zone and shakes up the sewing routine some.

Now, what one earth will I do for the backing?!

Thank you for all the comments about our plans to go ice skating. I have been on a  computer hiatus for the past few days but will get to the emails eventually. It was a great day out. The girls all had fun, and ate themselves into a stupor in Pizza Express afterwards. Emily also made a new friend. His name was Sebastian. He was instrumental in making the skating such a success for her. Without him I think she would still have been clinging to the boards two hours in.

  1. Your cushion cover is truly beautiful. Why not keep the back plain with perhaps a small amount of rainbow detail? The ice skating looks like it was fun! Di x

  3. Tell you what, you sloths sure do make pretty things. I think your quilt-embroidery for this project was inspired and there is such a lot of effort and detail in this - hope the recipient will love it to bits!

  11. I love the idea of embroidery as quilting. The tiny green flowers and the darker blue one are my favourite, but all are lovely. The rainbow ties look great, too.
Ice skating in summer seems so cool :) I don't think we have such helpers as Sebastian, but like the idea.

  12. Im right there with you in sloth-ville girl. I’ve spent a huge chunk of the weekend either running like a mad woman or sleeping (but mostly sleeping !)

The cushion cover is ABSOLUTELY terrific. I’d be doing a scrappy back in rainbow colours to keep the theme going.

I definitely need a Sebastian. Do you think it would look weird though since I’m an adult?

  14. Embrace SLOTH! Especially when you make such loveliness as this Susan - I love your twists on things - you are so inspirational!

Clarissa had a penguin friend last time she went ice skating but now with lots of roller skating I am hoping she can do without next time!

  15. I've just spent about 5 minutes looking at the cushion detail, the flowers and the stitched ties are so well matched to their background it's impossible to see them except in a close up. Be proud of it, it's fantastic.

  20. Your hexie pillow top is beautiful and I think the embroidery is very complimentary to the overall look. I finished my hexies while on holiday and now to figure out what to do with them!
Emily looks to be having a grand time with Sebastian, I wish they had something like that around here for my kiddies to use, me too come to think of it {it's been ages, the ice age, since I've been on skates}. Now I'm terrified of falling and breaking something.
