I've got about fifty birdie blocks pieced now. So I decided to see how hard it was to then turn them into bigger blocks. I thought I would do my usual thing and make it up as I went along. I want to see just how big a quilt top fifty birds would make. Because I still have a lot more birds I can use. Do I turn them all into mini blocks first, or do I estimate how many I need and then realise that I have enough for two quilts?

I am hoping a whole quilt like this will work.

So if I had eight blocks of this size, there about, then I would have a quilt top of approximately 42" x 56" - without any borders or anything like that taken into consideration. We are starting to get into a nice size throw by then. Therefore I think it would make sense to piece all the mini birdie blocks together and see how it looks. Because I really don't plan to do a queen sized quilt like this. And I am already running a new (easier) idea through my head of what to do with round two of the birds.
I would welcome opinions before I reach the point of no return, if you have an opinion about this at all that is.

I like the random placement, I would go with piecing them together and seeing.

ReplyDeleteWhy not place them all on a white sheet and see how you like them and then piece them together like that! I love random and asymmetry (can't spell it) and lack of planning - think it's called organic! Looking great!

I think your stained quilt worked so well because it was very similar to this - bright random fabric with white sashing to rest your eye. It's one of the prettiest quilts I know, so repeating that theme will take you to a winner. Keep stitching!
ReplyDeleteHere's what I think will happen... You'll make more blocks than you need. Then you'll decide to make two quilts instead of one. You make the first and then you feel inspired to make something different and you save the rest of your blocks and start a whole new project :) next year or the year after your second stack of blocks will turn up and you will be totally inspired to make something very different and totally gorgeous with them :)

ReplyDeleteI'm with Nicky on the laying it all out on a sheet and seeing how it all looks, then just go for the piecing. That's how I did the back of Proj 51! Love Annabella's comment - MF Birdie Quilt! Perfect! It's even got a name already!

ReplyDeleteLove the look, but have to say I'd go large and use them all - they've been collected as a huge sample of different birdies so it feels right to keep them in a flock :) Bet this goes against your plan doesn't it?! x
