Sugar Alert!

I made the chocolate cake, and mixed up the icing for Helen's birthday cake. I have to say that melting a whole Chocolate Orange into the icing was inspired a sick idea. The icing is so sweet it is vile. The girls love it. I suppose that is what it is all about. I left the icing and decorating of the cake to Emily. She took to the task with zeal.

She wasn't up to random placement of the chocolates. She needed more control. But I think she did a brilliant job, Helen is happy and Emily didn't let any of those little buttons go to waste.

The cake will be cut tonight. Just so I can enjoy the pleasure of four girls hyped up on sugar at bedtime. Obviously I have no sense of self preservation. Meanwhile we have an afternoon at the cinema and then Pizza Express. I am all set to go.

If you don't hear from me for several days then I didn't survive the experience, or it really was Death by Chocolate.

  3. The tower of chocolate buttons was an inspired idea! You definitely don't want any of them to go to waste.
I'm still not sure whether I would ever melt a Terry's chocolate orange into icing. They cost a fortune here!

  10. Ha ha, I think I might have put in half the choc orange and kept the rest for myself! I might be tempted to munch a little dark choc along with the cake - just to take away a bit of sweetness :)
Emily's done a great job of decorating the cake.
Have a fun time today. I've only recently discovered the joys of Pizza Express :)

  12. LOL that cake brings back all too vivid memories of the year my mother let my friends and I decorate my birthday cake with royal icing and make stuff from it. I ate so much that that night I was sick.
I have NEVER eaten royal icing since.
Lets hope your girls have better sense than I :)
    Enjoy your weekend

  21. Save me a piece of cake. It's looks pretty darn spectacular.

The one saving grace is that while the girls are awake it's going to be AWFUL but when they crash down off that sugar high they're going to be comatose. I hope you made fruit salad or something equally healthy for breakfast!

  23. Happy Birthday to Helen!

Your description of the icing as being so sweet that it's vile had me chuckling. Reminds me of one birthday cake I made and used SKOR bar bits in between the layers of cake and again on top of the frosting. It was waaaaaay too sweet and we had to scraped it off so we could enjoy the homemade cake without gagging from the sugar overload. Good thing birthday cakes are only once a year... your girls may have enough of a sugar buzz from this to last until next year. ;o)

  26. They will bounce for a minute and then crash and burn. Oh the quiet that will commence when the crash and burn happens. What movie will you see?

  27. Just catching up on my google reader during a break - after a very busy weekend of visitors - but I had to comment.

This cake looks AMAZING! You surely are the queen of baking! The kids must have been gobsmacked by the sight of that! Have a good week!
