Meandering hexies down the centre of the tablerunner using the mini charm pack I got at the Retreat this summer and some fussy cuts from my Cherry Christmas FQ. Then scrappy squares as a border. Yesterday I did the hexies and tested the random placement on a piece of Egyptian white cotton I won from Empress Mills.
Today I did the scrappy border and then machine appliquéd the hexies down the middle. I used my zipper foot to be able to see that the needle was as close to the edge as possible. Does anyone else do this, or is there another foot that would be better?
I had to use the camera flash to get a remote idea of the colours as everything was just looking dull otherwise. But I am pleased with how it looks so far.
I have some quilting ideas percolating in my brain. And I am very happy with how fast this is going together. Funny how I can get things done if I actually concentrate rather than prevaricate!
Susan
This looks great! Fresh and just a little like Christmas. I would love to get it :)
ReplyDeleteAs if the use of 'prevaricate' wasn't impressive enough the runner looks gorgeous too! :)
ReplyDeleteThis looks awesome!!
ReplyDeleteI use an open toed appliqué foot. Never thought to use my zipper foot but that sounds like a good option in the absence of an appliqué foot.
Super pretty and festive. Where do you find all these swaps. I've never participated in one but would like to give it a go after Christmas.
ReplyDeleteI love this idea, it looks so fun and festive, uncluttered but full of colour. I might have to make something like it sometime soon.
ReplyDeleteit's beautiful in it's complex simplicity ;O)
ReplyDeletei really like your runner
Ah, 'tis very beautiful.
ReplyDeleteYour partner is extremely lucky.
I'm feeling rather festive already!
xxxx
p.s. I would love to get a mini-charm pack. You don't know anywhere this side of the pond that sells them do you?
I don't hate it either! How could I when it looks this cute. Interested to see how you will quilt it but it promises to be another Susan spectacular!
ReplyDeleteYou and me both on the prevarication front!
Looks great - is it a Hexapede?
ReplyDeleteReally lovely :-) Love those mini charm packs!
ReplyDeleteLooks lovely - really Christmassy :-)
ReplyDeleteI love that! It reminds me of those hexagonal chemistry diagrams (really scary looking one here: http://ars.els-cdn.com/content/image/1-s2.0-S1876107011001544-gr1.jpg ), or the board from the TV show Blockbuster :)
ReplyDeleteLooks great. I would use an edge stitch foot for attaching appliqué - it is a bit like a quarter inch foot except that the bar you line your fabric up with is in the dead centre of the foot so you can get your needle right up close to the edge. Amy at badskirt explains much better than I can http://badskirt.blogspot.co.nz/2010/07/edgestitch-foot-demystified.html?m=1
ReplyDeleteohh it's gorgeous, I love those mini charms, such a great way to use them up..quicker than the stitchery thing im supposed to be doing with the mini charm border..
ReplyDeleteWow, it is lovely. Really love the shape the hexies make, some lovely negative space and the scrappy border really makes it sing. I can't wait to see the quilting.
ReplyDeleteAnother lovely Susan creation!
ReplyDeleteIT IS BEAUTIFUL! Beautiful. Your partner is so lucky!
ReplyDeleteTerrific - just reminded me I have a mini-Blitzen somewhere!
ReplyDeleteI use a transparent open fronted foot, not an appliqué one, not sure what it's called though, sorry!
Cunning plan with the meandering hexies and the mini charms, looks fab! I use the same foot as Hadders
ReplyDeleteI use my normal 1/4" foot and line up the edge and move needle positions. Looks fabulous!
ReplyDeleteOh it's wonderful. Hope I'm your partner. Would save you postage too as you can give it me soon in person ;-) Yeah I know dream on!! My zipper foot on my old machine was completely different to my new machine. The old one would have been perfect for this had I thought to use it...
ReplyDeleteI use my plastic see through foot and that seems to work for me.
ReplyDeleteLOVE this little creation. Those colours are so fresh and the design is very modern!
The white background really let's the rich colours of the hexagons and border 'shine'. Di x
ReplyDeleteThis looks fantastic, your parter is going to be thrilled with it
ReplyDeleteI use a see through foot no idea what it's name is. In hate my zipper foot with a passion so avoid using it unless I really have too.
ReplyDeleteHexie's are looking fab against the white and I love the Cherry Christmas. I didn't know there were such things as mini charm packs, think I need to investigate ;)
Your hexies are so cute Susan - love the fussy cut ones and the scrappy border!
ReplyDeleteYou got to love a scrappy border! Looking great Susan - looks like a super productive day.
ReplyDeleteYOu do these Christmas table runners so beautifully and this year's is no exception. Love it and look forward to seeing what quilting trick is up your sleeve.
ReplyDeleteOooh I love this, it looks great.
ReplyDeleteI love it. It's a nice way to do Christmas without doing something that so "Christmas"y, if you know what I mean. It's still has a Christmas-ness to it, but it's clean and modern and a bit fun. Very nice.
ReplyDeleteE
Oh this is so beautifully you! I've been thinking of a table topper idea for my house & you've have inspired me. I have an applique foot for my machine (Pfaff) which has a much wider gap in the middle of it so you can see the number 33 bus coming if you want! Jxo
ReplyDeleteI love this and will sit and wait while you finish it. More hand quilting in your future?
ReplyDeleteHow cute, great finish!!
ReplyDeleteIt akes me wish I was in it too! i've been using up my mini charms from the FQR too.
ReplyDeleteI think it's fab Susan!
ReplyDeleteLove the runner... Reminds me of the Very Hungry Caterpillar ... I use an edge stitch for machine appliqué too...
ReplyDeleteMaybe we should have had a 'challenge' for mini-charms for returnees to FQR in 2013....
fab susan it is gorgeous you will have a very happy partner !!!!
ReplyDeleteIt's fabulous! I just use my quarter inch foot and line the edge of the fabric up with the little bump on the inside edge of my foot but I'm off for a look at my zip foot!
ReplyDeleteThat's gonna be one lucky recipient to get this table runner for sure! I think it's a GREAT idea, and I'm in LOVE with hexagons so I can only be a winner in my book :) Have fun with quilting it!
ReplyDeleteJust loving this :-)
