The Finish Line is in Sight

Do you remember the great big roll of scrappy binding I made a little while ago? The one I wound onto an empty Aurifil bobbin?

Well, it came time to use it today and I had this idea to whack that spool onto the doohickey where you put the thread when winding bobbins. And then I just slowly unwound the binding as I stitched it to the quilt. Worked a treat. I am sure this is not an original idea, but it was new to me, and I will most definitely do it again. It kept everything so much less tangled and disorganised than normal.

Now I just have a whole lot of this to do.

The light is at the end of the tunnel. Woohoo!

  1. Woo hoo for nearly being finished. I read that Katy IAGM does this with the binding I was going to try it but I haven't actually got to the end of a roll or aurifil yet!

  2. What a brilliant idea and since my machine has one of those I'm going to try it out too - should keep it away from the cat!

  3. It's a fab idea - I always wind my binding onto an old cotton spool but it never occurred to me to put the spool on the spare "thing" on the machine! Will give it a try next time. Rx

  13. Great idea to keep the binding out of trouble until it's safely stitched down. Will we get a big reveal soon?

  17. If you're working on what I think you're working on then clever you. The binding thing is indeed genius as I usually have it trailing around my legs.

  20. I read that as 'Light at the end of the funnel', but that was my day!

  21. Huh, so you mean the binding doesn't have to be an unfurling roll that gleefully tumbles off and wraps itself round your leg, the chair leg, and the ironing board leg for good measure? You're no fun... ;o)

  24. Very clever, and much neater than my newly discovered method with a chopstick stuck on the edge of the table ;)
Your scrappy binding is so lovely.

  25. Great idea...my thread holder for filling bobbins is on the front of the machine so I normally throw my rolled up binding in a drawer and let it slowly unfurl...but I may give your idea a crack !

An almost finish always feels great !

  26. Susan - I've been using an empty aurifil spool for this same purpose for years - I love doing it this way - but drop an old used cd on the spool before you wind your bobbin on it - it holds the binding and keeps it from drooping!

  32. I don't use Aurfil (can't find it in my area) but the tube is great. Why did you make so much binding and do the colors match quilt your making?
